Free Instagram analytics, and where free stops

Short version: the best free Instagram analytics is Instagram Insights, the one already in the app. It is first-party, it costs nothing, and for a lot of people it is genuinely enough. Silma costs $9 a month and has no free tier. If free covers your job, use free. What follows is where free stops, with the limits quoted from Meta’s documentation rather than asserted.

The free options, and which to actually use

Instagram Insights, in the app under a professional account. First-party, so it sees things no third-party tool can. Nothing free beats it for your own account.

Meta Business Suite is the same underlying data on a desktop screen, which matters if you build reports and hate doing it on a phone.

For the other platforms, TikTok Studio and YouTube Studio are the equivalents, also free and also first-party. We wrote up what those two cover and where they stop separately, including why nobody has TikTok retention data for an account they do not own.

Every free third-party Instagram tool is working from less than Insights already hands you, because they are reading what the API exposes and Insights is the API’s home. Start with Insights. Only add something else once you can name a question it cannot answer.

What free gives you, which is more than people assume

Reach, views, watch time, sends, saves, comments, shares, follows at account level, and audience demographics. That covers the honest version of “did this land” for one account.

Meta named watch time, likes and sends as ranking signals in January 2025, and all three are visible to you for free. There is no secret paid metric that unlocks the algorithm. Anyone selling you one is selling you something else.

If you want to get more out of what you already have, we wrote up what each metric actually means and how to read Reels analytics, both from the same primary sources. Those cost nothing either.

Where free stops

1. It only ever shows you your own account

This is the big one, and it is structural rather than a missing feature. Insights cannot tell you whether 8,400 views is good, because that depends on what your account normally does and on what everyone else in your niche is getting. There is no baseline for anybody but you, so there is no way to tell a genuine outlier from an ordinary week.

2. It is entirely after the fact

Every number arrives once the post is public and the decision is already made. Nothing in Insights looks at a draft. If the hook was weak, you find out by watching the retention chart of a video you cannot take back.

3. It counts outcomes and never explains them

Insights tells you a video held 31% of viewers. It does not tell you that the overlay was unreadable at 0:04, or that the visual opened on a logo while the voice opened on the result. Counting is not diagnosis.

4. There are documented gaps in the data itself

These are in Meta’s own API reference, not complaints:

  • No per-Reel follows or profile visits. profile_visits and follows are exposed for feed posts and stories, not for Reels. Any tool showing you a confident per-Reel follows number is estimating.
  • Story replies read zero in Europe and Japan. Since 1 December 2020 for European users and 14 April 2021 for Japanese users, replies return 0. If your monthly template has that row, it has been reporting a hard zero for years.
  • Small accounts see less. follower_count and online_followers are unavailable on accounts with fewer than 100 followers, so the people with the most to learn are the ones locked out.
  • Best-time-to-post data is a 30 day window. online_followers is only available for the last 30 days, so any “best time” claim built on it is a short memory.
  • Numbers move for up to 48 hours. Meta says data used to calculate metrics may be delayed up to 48 hours, which is why a figure you screenshot on the day rarely matches the one in the report.
  • Impressions is gone. It was deprecated on 21 April 2025, so year-over-year charts that cross that date are comparing two different things.

When free is enough

Genuinely, and this is not a setup:

  • You run one account and post when you have something to say.
  • You want to know what landed, and you are happy to find out afterwards.
  • You are not comparing yourself to anyone else in a way that has to hold up.
  • Nobody is asking you to prove the channel works.

If that is you, close this tab and go read the metric definitions. You will get more out of an hour with Insights than an hour of tool shopping.

When it stops being enough

  • Somebody else is paying you for this. An agency or freelance social manager at renewal needs to show what worked and why, against a benchmark, and “here is our own account over time” is a weak case.
  • You need to know before you post. A draft that is going out to a client’s audience is a bad place to learn that the first three seconds do not hold.
  • You need the why. Once you have twenty posts and no pattern, more counting does not produce the pattern. Something has to read the videos.
  • You are learning from other people. The most useful lesson available is usually somebody else’s post that beat their own median, and no free tool will compute that for an account you do not own.

What Silma costs, plainly

$9 a month for Lite, which is 200 credits, roughly 40 pre-checks or 16 full breakdowns of a new reel. No free tier and no trial. It reads the frames and hears the words, scores a draft before you post it, and ranks competitor posts by how far each beat that account’s own median rather than by raw views.

That is the part free does not do. It is not a better dashboard, and if a better dashboard is what you need, Insights is free and already installed.

Free tells you what happened. This tells you why. Paste a Reel, or upload a draft before it goes out. $9 a month, cancel any time. Check your first video →

Questions

What is the best free Instagram analytics tool?+

Instagram’s own Insights, and it is not close. It is first-party, so it sees data no third-party tool can access, it costs nothing, and it needs no connection or permission beyond having a professional account. Any free third-party tool is working from less data than Insights already gives you. Start there and only add something else once you can name the question Insights cannot answer.

Does Silma have a free plan?+

No. There is no free tier and no trial. The cheapest plan is Lite at $9 a month, which is 200 credits, roughly 40 pre-checks or 16 full breakdowns of a new reel. If free covers your job, use free. This page is not going to pretend otherwise.

Why can I not see follows or profile visits on a Reel?+

Because Meta does not expose them at that level. In the Instagram Platform API, profile_visits and follows are available for feed posts and stories, and not for Reels. This is a gap in the data itself, not in your account, and any dashboard showing a confident per-Reel follows number is doing its own attribution rather than reading a real figure.

Why are some metrics missing on my small account?+

Meta documents that follower_count and online_followers are not available on business or creator accounts with fewer than 100 followers. So the accounts with the most to learn from audience data are the ones that cannot see it. Nothing you can do about it, and worth knowing before you assume something is broken.

When is free analytics no longer enough?+

At the point you need to answer a question about someone else’s account, or about a video you have not posted yet. Insights only covers your own account and only after publishing. If your job is proving to a client or a boss that the channel worked, or deciding whether a draft is strong enough to ship, those are questions the free tools are not built to answer.
