Virlo alternatives for short-form video research

Short version: Virlo and Silma do the same research job on the same three platforms, and Virlo does it across a wider surface: competitor ad creative, an API, an MCP server, alerting. If your work stops when you have found the trend, Virlo is the deeper tool and this page will not pretend otherwise. Silma covers a half Virlo does not claim: reading a video’s frames to say why it worked, and scoring your own draft before you post it.

Virlo is a social listening tool for TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. It watches niches for outliers and emerging creators, tracks specific accounts and videos with alerts, turns what it finds into briefs through Content Studio, and analyses competitor Meta ads on its higher plan. It sells to content strategists, media buyers and agencies, and it is priced for them.

Where they overlap

This is the closest comparison on this site, so it is worth being blunt about it. Both tools cover exactly the same three platforms. Both surface outliers rather than raw view counts. Both let you follow a set of creators and get told when something moves. Both turn what they find into something you can act on. If finding the trend is the whole job, the honest answer is that Virlo has more of the machinery: custom niches, webhook and Slack alerts, Zapier and n8n, an API and an MCP server, none of which Silma has or is building.

Where they differ

Virlo watches what is published. Silma also judges what is not. Every Virlo feature on its site operates on video that already exists in the world. Silma’s Pre-Check takes your draft file, before anyone has seen it, and returns a 0 to 100 score, a predicted retention curve with the drop points named, and a ranked fix list. As of August 2026 nothing on virlo.ai claims a pre-publish score.

Virlo tells you what is working. Silma tells you why. Finding a video that beat its baseline is the easy half; knowing which of the forty things in it mattered is the hard half. Silma extracts frames and reads them alongside the transcript, so it can name the hook type, the cut rhythm, the text-overlay timing and the moment the visual stops matching the voice. Virlo does not claim frame-level analysis.

Virlo is built for a team. Silma is built for the person editing. Meta Ads Intelligence, three seats, automation hooks and an API are agency and media-buyer features. If you are one person deciding whether to post this Reel on Thursday, most of that is machinery you will not switch on, and the entry price reflects who it is for.

When to choose Virlo

  • Research is the job. You want the widest possible view of what is moving in a niche, with custom niches and alerts, and you are not asking a tool to grade your own work.
  • You buy media. Meta Ads Intelligence has no equivalent in Silma and is not on its roadmap.
  • You want trend data inside your own systems, through the API, the MCP server, Zapier or n8n.
  • You are a team. Three seats ship with Pro; Silma has no seat model.
  • You want to try before paying. Virlo has a free trial and Silma does not.

When to choose Silma

  • You want a verdict on the video you are about to post, not only on the ones that already went out.
  • You want the reason a video worked at the level of frames, cuts and overlay timing, not just the fact that it beat a baseline.
  • You post for a business and want ideas scored against the person who actually buys, rather than against a generic audience.
  • You want the research half at $9 to $29 rather than $49, because you are one person and will not use the automation.

Other tools people put on this list

The same shortlist tends to come up. Shortimize is the closest on tracking; we compare it here. Eden is a broader creator workspace with a research layer bolted on, compared here. 1of10 and ViewStats are YouTube-centric outlier tools worth a look if long-form YouTube is your main channel. We have not run those last two and are not going to describe features we have not verified.

Questions

Is Silma a replacement for Virlo?+

For finding what is working, they do the same job on the same three platforms, and Virlo does it across a wider surface: Meta ad creative, an API, an MCP server and alerting that Silma has none of. What Silma adds is the other half of the loop: it reads the frames of a video to say why it worked, and it scores your own draft before you post it. If your workflow ends at research, Virlo is the deeper tool. If it ends at publishing, Silma covers the part Virlo does not claim.

Does Virlo analyse video frame by frame?+

Not that virlo.ai claims as of August 2026. Its named features are Orbit Search, Custom Niches, Tracking Center, Content Studio, Meta Ads Intelligence and an MCP server, and they describe monitoring and searching published video rather than reading a single video’s frames. Silma extracts frames and reads them with the transcript, which is how it catches an unreadable overlay at 0:04 or a visual that opens on a logo while the voice opens on the result.

Does Virlo score a draft before you post?+

No such feature appears on virlo.ai as of August 2026. Virlo is built around content that is already published: spotting it, tracking it and turning it into briefs. Silma’s Pre-Check takes the draft file itself and returns a 0 to 100 score, a predicted retention curve with the drop points named, and a ranked list of fixes, before anything is public.

Which one is cheaper?+

Silma at the entry point, by a wide margin. Virlo’s cheapest paid plan is Starter at $49 a month; Silma’s Lite is $9 and Starter is $29. Higher up they stop being comparable: Virlo Pro is $199 a month for 12,000 credits, three seats, Meta Ads Intelligence and automation hooks, while Silma Pro is $79 for 15 tracked accounts and 1,500 credits with none of that. If you need the automation, $199 may be the better value; if you need a verdict on your video, it is not what you are buying.

Can I use both?+

Yes, and for an agency that is the sensible combination: Virlo to watch the market broadly and feed trends into your own systems through its API or MCP server, Silma to check the specific video you are about to ship for a client. There is no integration between them; you would paste a link from one into the other.
